Meet Dr. Nino Sorgente, Ph.D.

Nino Sorgente obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biophysics from Loyola University in Chicago. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Rush Medical School, he joined the Department of Biochemistry at USC's School of Dentistry, then the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Southern California.

After leaving USC, he became Principal Scientist at IOLAB and then President of Immudyne Inc. — one of the pioneering companies in beta glucan research and commercialization.

In 2004, Dr. Sorgente designed a large-scale manufacturing plant for yeast beta glucan in Georgia, USA — producing 99% pure beta glucan marketed globally to the poultry and shrimp industries. Defensin™ is the culmination of his life's work.

What conditions suppress the immune system?

Conditions range from age to depression to radiation therapy to chemotherapy. In all cases the immune system becomes suppressed — cells are fewer in number and have reduced function.

What are the side effects of too much beta glucan?

The amount in Defensin is appropriate for daily use. Very large amounts (200mg/day or more) may cause mild gastrointestinal upset. At recommended doses, there are no known side effects.

Is beta glucan FDA approved?
